,,Dr. Aurel Vlad” Middle School is a school with legal personality, established in 1954. Because the number of students increased a lot, in 1977 the school was divided into Middle School No. 1 and Middle School No. 2. In 1982, the new premises of the Middle School no. 1 – a 3-storey building is built.
On September 15, 2000 – Middle School no. 1 Orăștie receives the name of “Dr. Aurel Vlad” Middle School. In the years 2005 and 2008, two more premises were built within the radius of the center premises, which are intended for primary education, a library and a medical and speech therapy office. In 2009 the school received the title of European School. The current educational space has 44 classrooms, 5 laboratories, 4 offices, 1 gym, library, banquet hall, etc.
The school has 949 students, of which 862 are Romanian, and the rest are Hungarian and Roma. 598 students are in primary education, of which 176 attend the Step-by-Step system, 38 are in the Hungarian section in the simultaneous education regime and 51 students of the Roma ethnicity who also learn in the simultaneous regime. 82% of the students come from the town and 18% commute from the surrounding towns. 186 students have requested help for school supplies, 272 have social scholarships, 77 students have merit scholarships, 26 have study scholarships, 64 have food allowance for children with CES; 207 students benefit from social vouchers. Out of the total number of students, 143 are socially assisted at risk of dropping out of school. They come from families with unemployed parents or who support themselves from seasonal activities. The teaching and auxiliary teaching staff consists of 84 teaching staff (59 full-time and 20 substitute), 1 school counselor, 4 support teachers, 1 speech therapist, mediator, administrative staff. There are 37 teaching staff in the primary cycle, and 42 in the secondary school.
Numerous students from both the gymnasium and the primary cycle participate annually in Olympiads and competitions, obtaining very good results. The school organizes numerous extracurricular activities: trips, hikes, summer camps, sports activities, volunteering, artistic activities, greening, etc., in which many children, teachers and parents participate. The school’s collaboration with students’ families is generally good, but there are also situations where parents do not respond to the school’s requests.
